LIVE, LOVE, LEARN, DANCE!

Learning is such an interesting process.  To be able to progress as a dancer, I take lessons with my ongoing teacher, and he and I study occasionally with world-class coaches.  This past week, we had the opportunity to have a coaching session with Bill Sparks.  Bill is absolutely amazing as a dancer and as a teacher.

Bill sees so quickly the next technique piece I need to master.  He wastes no time and begins drilling me to develop the next skills.  He literally acts like a drill sergeant.

When I study with him, I need to brace myself for the fact that I might come away from my session with him feeling frustrated, confused, and insecure.  I often leave feeling as if I have two left feet and no longer know how to walk – much less dance.  I found this session no exception.

Ballroom Dance – Inspiration is All Around

by Naomi Mitchell on April 15, 2012

Posted in: Living, Practice

I went dancing several nights ago at a studio I hadn’t been to in some time.  I’m glad I went.  I saw a lot of familiar faces I hadn’t seen in a while.  I danced with many people I hadn’t danced with in a while.  I got to watch others dance after not seeing them do so in a while.

I saw so much improvement in so many people. I saw more grace, more elegance, more confidence, and more joy.  I felt blessed and inspired to witness others bloom.

I was able to dance and to practice new shapes and modes of movement that I’m learning.  I treasure the opportunity to do so with so many people who I’ve not danced with in a while.  Dancing with a variety of people helps me to grow and be inspired in my dancing.

While I felt happy and inspired most of the evening, I resisted the guidance of one of my dance partners.  He gave me some feedback that I didn’t take to heart in the moment.  I thought, I’m here to dance, not to have you teach me.

Becoming Ballroom Inspired: Watching Transformation in Action

Ilove to dance, and I’ve been doing it for some time now.  Besides actually dancing, I love to watch other people dance.  I love the music, the bodies in motion to the music, and the pleasure on their faces. I particularly enjoy watching others grow in their dancing over a period of time. Sometimes, as […]

Learning Ballroom Dance: Bring the Right Partners With You

March 13, 2012

When I say partners, I’m referring to our inner spirit partners, not dance partners.  It doesn’t matter who your partner-in-the-flesh is (or isn’t, for that matter). I’ve discovered that I subconsciously choose a set of partners to take into my ballroom dance lessons or my practice.  I’ve learned that my choice of partners affects my […]

Ballroom Dance Competition: I Can’t Wait!

Thumbnail image for Ballroom Dance Competition: I Can’t Wait!

It’s been more than a year since I have danced competitively. I miss it. Until three years ago, if you had told me I’d be a ballroom dance competitor, I’d have had a good laugh.  Until then, I thought competition was for others -not for me. I’ve never had what I would call a competitive […]

Get Ballroom Inspired: 3 Reasons to Dance

February 15, 2012
Thumbnail image for Get Ballroom Inspired: 3 Reasons to Dance

Ballroom dancing is one of my favorite activities. Yet, as with anything I do routinely, sometimes I take the experience for granted. A few months ago, I had the opportunity to attend the monthly dance of a regional chapter of USA Dance. There were between 80 and 100 people in attendance.  Most weekends, I dance […]
